Summer Fun — and Hazards
Posted on Jul 21, 2025
Summer is all about getting outdoors. But it isn’t without hazards. Taking some simple precautions can help you protect your skin, eyes, and body while you make the most of the season.
Prevent Sunburns
You may think of sunburns as more of an inconvenience than a true health hazard. But the fact is that a sunburn is a first-degree burn. It triggers a painful response to the touch as it enters the dermal (live) layer of the skin—where the sensory nerve endings that sense heat and pain reside.
You can prevent sunburns with sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
If you do get sunburned, cool the skin with water or use a sunburn spray. Cover blisters with a dry, sterile dressing.
Dress Appropriately
Do not allow small children or infants to sit directly in the sun. Their ability to sweat and cool down may not be fully developed. Dress them in lightweight, light-colored clothing that reflects sunlight instead of absorbing it.
Stay Hydrated
Hot, humid weather increases your risk of dehydration and heatstroke—especially during physical activity. Heatstroke is a serious medical emergency where the body can’t cool itself through sweating.
Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day and take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors to prevent overheating.
Protect Your Eyes
Just like your skin needs sunscreen, your eyes need protection too. Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UV rays. Polarized lenses can also help reduce glare and eye strain.
Stay Safe During Thunderstorms
Summer storms can be dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, lightning is the second-leading cause of storm-related deaths in the U.S.
If a thunderstorm is approaching, head indoors and avoid water. Do not seek shelter in ungrounded buildings like storage sheds or barns.
