Don’t Miss the Deadline: NJ’s New E‑Bike Insurance Law and How to Get Covered Now

If you ride an e-bike in New Jersey, there’s a new rule you’ll want to pay attention to. Earlier this year, the state passed a law that expands which e-bikes are considered “motorized bicycles,” and that means some riders will now need insurance for the first time. The good news? You’ve got a short grace period to figure it out, and time to secure the right coverage before the deadline.

Which E‑Bikes Are Affected?

Not all e-bikes are affected, but it’s important to understand where yours falls. The requirement applies to higher-powered models, including:

  • Bikes with a throttle that can power the bike up to 15 mph
  • Bikes that reach speeds between 21 and 28 mph
  • Bikes with higher motor power or small engine equivalents

These categories are now legally considered motorized bicycles under New Jersey law, making proper insurance coverage essential for staying compliant and protected.

Which E‑Bikes Are Exempt?

Lower-speed e-bikes are still treated like traditional bicycles. You do NOT need insurance if your bike:

  • Uses pedal-assist only (no throttle)
  • Stops providing assistance at 20 mph or below
  • These are classified as low-speed electric bicycles and remain exempt.

What Kind of Insurance Is Required?

If your e-bike qualifies, you’ll need a basic liability policy with at least:

  • $15,000 for injury or death of a single person in an accident
  • $30,000 for injuries or deaths of multiple people in an accident
  • $5,000 for property damage

These policies are meant to cover damages and give you an added layer of financial protection while you ride your e-bike.

Pedestrian Protection Rules

Insurance must also cover injuries to pedestrians involved in accidents with insured e-bikes. Starting in 2027, a pedestrian’s own insurance may cover their injuries in some cases instead. This added layer of protection is another reason why having the right policy in place matters.
